Letter to the Editor: Building prudent policies for mental health & substance use in BC
In the early days of spring 2026, I authored a letter to the editor for the Vancouver Sun contesting the effectiveness and prudence of involuntary substance use treatment as a policy response in British Columbia. Written in clear, accessible language for a general readership, the piece engages ongoing public and policy debate while raising questions on the evidence base and ethical implications of this approach.
The central argument is that, in a context of constrained fiscal capacity, allocating substantial public resources to an intervention that remains contested in its effectiveness and raises significant ethical concerns is a precarious policy choice. Instead, the letter advocates for investment in upstream, voluntary, and wraparound supports that are comprehensive, culturally safe, and grounded in principles of self-determination.
It highlights alternative pathways that address the structural determinants of substance use, including housing instability, entrenched poverty, and limited access to voluntary mental health services. By reframing the policy conversation toward prevention and systemic support, the piece calls for more effective and equitable responses to the overdose crisis.
